Music Walks on Sundays at Prague Zoo
'Hudební vycházky' (Music Walks) are outdoor classical music concerts which take place in Prague Zoo in front of Gočár's Houses. After fourteen successful years, the event has become a traditional part of summer at the zoo. Not only animal lovers, but also classical music fans, will be at the zoo every Sunday until the beginning of October. The open-air concerts will take place once again in front of Gočár's Houses at the top of the zoo for two hours on Sundays. More and more music lovers seek out the event for its informal setting and quality music.
Czech and world classics
This year, a total of eighteen concerts will take place. Music fans will appreciate the selection of older and more contemporary classical music works, from Czech and world composers, performed by both famous and lesser-known musical ensembles. The Prague Wind Quintet definitely belongs to the first category. They will play compositions by Georges Bizet and Ludwig van Beethoven on the 21st of June.
An ensemble with a long tradition
The Prague Wind Quintet was founded in 1928 by Dr. Václav Smetáček, oboist and long-time permanent conductor of the Prague Symphony Orchestra. The quintet was reorganised in 1968 by the flutist and Professor Jan Hecl of the Prague Conservatory, who led the ensemble for a quarter of a century.
World festivals and Prague Zoo
Music critics consider the current ensemble as one of the best current wind orchestras. The ensemble has received many international awards, including the French CHOC du Monde de la Musique in 1999 for the best international recording of the year. The group also regularly performs at major music festivals in Europe and in the US. And now, visitors to Prague Zoo can also enjoy their music.
Mozart concludes the series
Sunday concerts at the zoo will continue until Sunday, the 4th of October, when Uni kvartet’s performance will conclude the concert series with compositions by Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Concerts always take place at 11am and 1pm. There is no dress code and the entertainment is included with regular entrance tickets.
